Frequently Asked Questions
What is Microsuction?
Microsuction ear wax removal is the most modern and safest method for clearing ear wax. This technique uses a gentle, specially-designed suction device to remove excess wax from the ear canal. To ensure precision and safety, I use magnifying loupes with a bright light, allowing me to see clearly down the ear canal to the eardrum.
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
Appointment duration varies based on the amount of ear wax to be cleared and whether it’s in one ear or both. Typically, the process takes 15-30 minutes. If all the wax cannot be removed in one session, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to ensure thorough ear care.
Is There Anything I Need to Do Before My Appointment?
For the best results, we recommend applying olive oil ear drops or spray 3-5 days before your appointment. This helps to soften the wax, making removal more comfortable and effective. Please avoid products like Otex, containing sodium bicarbonate, or hydrogen peroxide as they may irritate the ear canal and complicate wax removal.
What Will Happen at My Appointment?
When you arrive, I—Kate, your audiologist—will welcome you and go over a few questions about your ear health and any symptoms you’ve been experiencing. I’ll explain the microsuction procedure and have you sign a consent form before beginning. Your ears will be examined, and if you consent, a photograph of your ear canal can be taken before the procedure. If safe, I’ll proceed with the wax removal to restore your ear health.
